Sporting News is an
American sports website and former print magazine. It was established in 1886,
and it became the dominant American publication covering baseball—so much so
that it acquired the nickname "The Bible of Baseball."
It is
currently owned by Charlotte, North Carolina–based American City Business
Journals, a subsidiary of Advance Publications. After 122 years as a weekly
publication, the magazine switched to a biweekly publishing schedule in 2008 and
to a monthly schedule in 2011. In December 2012, the magazine announced it
would go digital-only starting in 2013.
Sky Sports is the brand
name for a group of sports-oriented television channels operated by the UK and
Ireland's main satellite pay-TV company, British Sky Broadcasting.
Sky Sports is the dominant subscription television sports brand in the United Kingdom
and Ireland. It was launched on 21 April, 1991.
It
has played a major role in the increased commercialization of British sport
since 1991, sometimes playing a large role in inducing organizational changes
in the sports it broadcasts, most notably when it encouraged the Premier League
to break away from the Football League in 1992. Sky Sports is perhaps best
known for its Premier League football coverage.
